Renesas Electronics Group announced today that it has expanded its cooperation with Qualcomm, an excellent supplier in the field of wireless technology, to provide 30W wireless charging for mid-range smartphones equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G 5G mobile platform.

This is the second collaboration between the two companies for high-power wireless charging smartphone reference design. The first cooperative solution designed for the flagship model is now in commercial samples. This cooperation is an important step taken by two global companies, Renesas and Qualcomm, to take highly integrated advanced wireless charging as a standard feature of 5G smartphones, expanding from flagship models to mainstream models.

The turnkey solution provided by Qualcomm's 5G mobile reference design is designed to help smartphone OEMs achieve low-cost wireless fast charging in flagship and mid-range models and has multiply programmable (MTP) and OTA update functions to simplify software development and Qi certification process. Renesas solutions provide ultra-high integration with an end-to-end system efficiency of over 85%, helping to extend the coverage of wireless charging technology to a wider customer base and simplify the process of adding wireless charging functions.

Amit Bavisi, Vice President and General Manager of the Wireless Power Division of Renesas Electronics' Mobile Infrastructure and Internet of Things Power Business Unit, said: "We are very pleased to strengthen our cooperation with Qualcomm to jointly develop advanced wireless charging solutions and open and reliable wireless power products. Thereby accelerating the mass production process. The combination of Renesas’ highly integrated 30W technology and Qualcomm’s cutting-edge 5G technology aims to provide OEMs with a turnkey solution with efficient wireless charging capabilities and provide wireless fast charging technology for the next generation of mid-range smartphones."

Ev Roach, Vice President of Product Marketing of Qualcomm, said: "In cooperation with Renesas, we are committed to creating a more seamless wireless user experience. In the future, we will continue to work together to develop a wireless fast charging turnkey solution for mainstream mobile devices."

The Renesas P9412 wireless power receiver is the industry’s first 30W power receiver that uses a high-voltage integrated capacitive voltage divider. Compared with traditional solutions, it has higher energy efficiency and a size reduction of 40%, freeing up PCB space for customers. It is easy to add other functions. In order to obtain a safe and fast charging experience, a customized high-power protocol is embedded in the device firmware, so that the system can verify the 15W power transmission that exceeds the WPC EPP standard. Renesas Wattshare technology can also use mobile devices as a power source for reverse wireless charging of accessories in the ecosystem, such as earphones and smartwatches.
